tennis

There are plenty of people out there who enjoy Tennis and this is because tennis is a relatively simple sport to play and it doesn’t really have as many rules as some others sport you might be interested in. While some people enjoy this sport in their free time, others love it so much that they’ve developed a career around it. Nevertheless, if you like playing this sport or you would like to start playing as soon as possible, below you will find some of the main rules you need to keep in mind in regards to it. Let’s check them out.

General rules

First of all, you will be able to play tennis either alone with another player or you may call someone else and play in doubles. If you go for the latter, you will need to stand on either side of the net. The way the game works is that you will need to use your racket in order to hit the ball over the net and keep it in play. If you will hit the ball into the net or out of play, then a point will be scored. In what regards the bouncing of the ball, it needs to bounce just once on your side, but you will have to hit it over the net after that. If you cannot hit it, then the other team will score.

Serving

Now it depends on who will serve first and this can be decided between the players. When you will serve, you’ll need to stand at the baseline and then serve the ball to the front box of the other side of the net. Do keep in mind that you have just 2 chances of ensuring you get the ball into play. And because we mention serving, this will be alternated by game.

Keeping the Ball in Play

Maybe you don’t really like to bring in a friend so that he or she can help you out with the game and if you will play alone, you should know that a ball will be deemed out of play if it will bounce past the alleys running along each side of the court or over the baseline. However, there is an exception to the rule when there will be 4 players on the field. In this case, even if the ball will land in the alley, the game can still continue as the ball is deemed to be in play.

Game Scoring

Even though games are played to 4 points, they will have to be won by 2. This means that the first point you will score is called a fifteen, the second is going to be called a thirty, the third a forty and the fourth is going to be your victory. There may also be an intervening point in a game which will reach forty-forty and when this happens, this is called an advantage. When the score is going to be read, the server’s score will be read first.

Set Scoring

A set consists of 6 games so if you will win 6 games, this means you have one a set. The rule here is that you need to win by 2 games. If there will ever be situations when a set reaches six-six, the players will indulge into what is called a tie breaker. However, if you’re not playing professionally, then the first player who will be the winner of the 2 sets will be declared the winner of the match.

Tiebreaker

Tiebreakers are really full of tension, because they will decide the faith of the entire set. So, if it’s your turn to serve when the tiebreaker comes, you will be required to serve 1 point and then this will be alternated between the players. Each of them will then server 2 points. Lastly, you should keep in mind that points are sequential and the first to 7 with a margin of minimum 2 will win.

If you love tennis and you would like to start playing it as soon as possible, now you know a bit more about the rules and how you have to play it. Be sure you will keep them in mind and you’ll definitely improve on your skills once you start practising.
