Dallas Cowboys’ stadium to host Serena, Maria and Andy

The inaugural Cowboys Tennis Slam may not break the all-time tennis attendance record when it’s played on July 10 (that mark will likely be set two days earlier when Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters play in Belgium), but the pair of exhibition matches at Cowboys Stadium may be the first ever played in the end zone of a 100,000-seat football field.

Continuing his attempt to turn his $1.2 billion building into a mecca for all sports, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will host a tennis exhibition in the Lone Star State six days after the end of Wimbledon. Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick and John Isner will play a pair of best-of-three matches at the stadium in Arlington, which will be configured to seat 20,000 fans. A temporary court will be erected in the west end zone.

Two immediate questions come to mind:

1. Will Jones be able to sell 20,000 tickets to two tennis matches (one of which includes the relatively unknown John Isner)?

2. Can the 3 million square-foot stadium contain the grunting of Maria Sharapova?

Bartoli tries to calm French storm

After winning her second round match at the French Open, Marion Bartoli tries to end the public war of words with Aravane Rezai.

“I think it’s really important to stay with what I said.  I said it’s obvious Rezai had some really great results in the past few weeks” said Bartoli. ” I think there is nothing negative that I said about her or game or whatever.

“I have no animosity against Aravane. It’s good we have as many French players. If others, Alize, could come back, that would be a driving factor for me. I take it as a motivating factor.  t helps me focus, practice, and try and improve every day. I think that’s the most important.

“I have absolutely no animosity whatsoever against Aravane, and I’m delighted she won Madrid,” she repeated. “The further she goes, the happier I am.”

Bartoli also said she was not focused on trying to be the last French player alive at the tournament. “I was very disappointed Gael [Monfils] lost 9-7 in the last set,” she said. “But I do hope that Jo[-Wilfried Tsonga] can make it as far as possible and that all the French players can go as far as possible in this tournament.”
