Vandeweghe to continue with coach Gambill

American CoCo Vandeweghe will continue to work with coach Jan-Michael Gambill in 2012, TENNIS.com has learned. The U.S. Fed Cup representative began to work with the former ATP Top-15 player in August after splitting with the USTA. She had been working with former U.S. Davis Cup captain Tom Gullikson, who is now working with Melanie Oudin, who herself recently split with her longtime coach Brian DeVilliers.

After reaching a career-high No. 89 in April, the 20-year-old Vandeweghe has fallen to No. 122. She and 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist Oudin will contest the upcoming USTA Australian Open Wild Card Playoff in hopes of getting a direct entry into Melbourne.

Bhupathi says Paes engineered split

Mahesh Bhupathi says that it was Leander Paes who decided to end their doubles partnership. Bhupathi will play next year with fellow Indian Rohann Bopanna, while Paes will partner Radek Stepanek.

“He just felt that we were possibly a little too old on the tour and not able to gel on a consistent basis,” Bhupathi told CNN-IBN. “He felt that our team needed fresh legs on either side. That was his point of view. Leander has a difference of opinion and I have to respect that. We’re professionals and at the end of the day we both love to compete and to win and we do whatever it takes to get the best out of both of us…There was definitely no fall-out.”

In related news, Bopanna’s former partner, Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi, told the Indian Express that he was “shocked” to find out that Bopanna had decided to split with him given that they had just won their first Masters Series title together at Bercy.

Santana: We could beat Argentina on roller skates

Former Grand Slam champion Manolo Santana of Spain all but guarantees a victory for his country in this weekend’s Davis Cup final against Argentina. Santana told Yahoo! Eurosport: “From 0 to 10, I would give Argentina a 2 to win Davis Cup and that’s being nice. Spain is clearly superior to Argentina. We are playing at home with a large audience. We are superior on clay, grass, hard courts and, if necessary, even on roller skates. I am optimistic. I think they will win 4-1 or 3-2, unless something unforeseen happens.”

Santana added that Spanish No. 1 Rafael Nadal is a class above Argentine No. 1 Juan Martin Del Porto. “I think Rafa today is far superior to Del Potro,” he said. “Del Potro went a long time without playing. In Valencia, where I saw him play, he wasn’t very accurate. I don’t believe he’s going to arrive in perfect form.”
