I was there… at the Macy’s Signing

Before the US Open Andy did a signing at Macy’s in New York to promote the new Lacoste fragrance, “Challenge”. Amanda Singh went along to the signing and sent in the following report to us:

“Hey everyone! I’m Amanda Singh from Queens writing in to describe one of my summer days well spent! I’m a HUGE Andy Roddick fan and anyone who knows me will probably say the same. I always try to see Andy whenever he comes to New York I met him a couple years ago and had the pleasure of giving him a birthday card I made :-) When I found out he would be at Macy’s, I cleared my schedule, which wasn’t hard to do and immediately started to plan out how I’d get there and what I would say to him.

So on August 27 my sister, friend, and I went to a Macy’s in Flushing. We soon found out we had the wrong information so we then got a ride to the right one. We lined up with other fans patiently awaiting his arrival, but the wait was soon over as Andy came strolling in. Of course we all got excited and let out a few screams even though I promised to act my age :-) …but cmon it’s Andy Roddick we’re talking about!! As we got closer to the front of the line, I was ready, camera in one hand, birthday card in the other…it’s become a tradition of mine to always give Andy a card whenever I meet him prior to the Open. When it was my turn, I gave him his card and in return, got a big smile…THAT made my day haha. He told me I shouldn’t have and it was very nice. I then took the opportunity to let him know what we went through that day to see him, and being himself, threw out a couple of jokes :-)

Even though we all got autographs, we weren’t entirely satisfied…we needed pictures! Taking the lead, I raced back in line for a second go and I’m glad I did! We got such a nice group shot and finally, my day felt complete. That day was definately the highlight of my summer and I am soooo happy that I can call myself an Andy Roddick fan.”

If you’ve seen Andy around New York do let us know about it! The address is iwasthere@andyroddick.com.

WashingtonPost.com: Roddick gracious despite early exit

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – One of the most touching scenes of the U.S. Open to date occurred at about midnight Wednesday, well after many viewers had turned off their TVs.

It was the brief post-match exchange between Andy Roddick and Janko Tipsarevic at the net following the Serbian’s 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) upset of the American.

The second-round loss, coming on the heels of Roddick’s third-round ouster at last year’s U.S. Open, was particularly disappointing given the effort Roddick had made in hopes of making a deep run in the tournament he won in 2003. He bowed out of Davis Cup to make the hard-court season a priority. And he had worked himself into peak hard-court form in the spring, only to develop a mild case of mononucleosis that wasn’t diagnosed until early August.

Then, in the U.S. Open’s second round, he drew Tipsarevic, with whom he had split two previous meetings and a formidable competitor, despite his modest size, who plays a high-risk game.

Featured Fan: August 2010

We are pleased to announce Betsy (aka Granny) is the latest super fan to be featured on AndyRoddick.com. Congratulations to Betsy who will receive the poster of her choice from the Proshop. Check out her heart-felt entry below:

“Andy, I have been a fan of yours, without reservation, since early in your career, and I will be a fan as long as you play. No other active player comes close. I am not sending a picture because I don’t know how to do that, so just picture a regular oldish person, sort of up-to-date and active, but nothing glamorous.

“On my refrigerator are pictures of my four grandchildren plus YOU! It would be a privilege to have you as a grandson. I thank you for always working to get better, for staying in shape so you don’t get injured often, for staying positive about your career, for never giving up, and for being a fine role model for young players.

I have had many hours of joy watching you play. I celebrate the wins, eagerly await the next match, and feel the anguish of every loss. I pray for you. For you to stay healthy, to achieve your goals for excellence, to do the very best you can in tournaments for as many years as possible, to enjoy your marriage and off-court life, and for you to continue to mature to your full potential as a man, but also to just stay the way you are always. Betsy (aka Granny)”

If you would like to be featured as one of Andy’s outstanding fans on AndyRoddick.com, please send your entries, and a photo if possible, to FeaturedFans@AndyRoddick.com.

Andy Out Of Open

Andy came up short in a heated battle against Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 6-7 (4). In front of 23,852 supportive fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Andy dug deep but Tipsarevic played a match players dream of executing on the big stage.

“On my little cheat sheet that Larry and I put together, I wanted to keep my unforced errors down, which I did,” said Roddick. “He’s going to take big swings at the ball. I wanted to make him do that from stretch positions, maybe on the move; I did that. I wanted to get a very high percentage of returns in play; I did that… He played very high risk and executed for four sets. I kept telling myself, ‘This has to have an expiration date on it.’ Unfortunately, I needed another set for that.”
