Wawrinka Too Good in Melbourne

Andy’s run in Melbourne has come to an end at the hands of the 19th seed, Stanislas Wawrinka who defeated Andy in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

“He played really well. He played aggressive, and, yeah, he outplayed me tonight,” conceded Andy.

Wawrinka’s shot making was on top form in this fourth-round clash and with plentiful backhand winners he had Andy under pressure early in the match; in the eighth game Wawrinka finally broke through Andy’s defences and served out the first set at 5-3.

Andy and Wawrinka both served strongly in the second set and the first chance to break didn’t come until the ninth game, when another backhand from Wawrinka sealed the decisive break of the set.

Andy went down a break early in the third set, but fighting hard, he did create chances to break the Swiss’ serve in the sixth game. Gutsy serving from Wawrinka saved the game, though, and he went on to set up a quarter-final clash with fellow countryman Roger Federer.

Summing up his first Grand Slam of 2011, Andy said:

“I’m glad I finished healthy. First tournament I’ve done that for a long time. But there’s certainly some work to be done. I got to figure out in kind of slower conditions how I can impose myself on some of those guys.”

Roddick vs. Wawrinka in Round 4

“Stan, he won Chennai, is playing well here,” Roddick commented regarding the Swiss possibly being his next opponent, which came to fruition when Wawrinka defeated Gael Monfils in straight sets later that day. Our No. 1 American and the 19th seed are set to play second on Rod Laver Arena after 7pm start (3am EST), battling for a spot in the quarterfinals.

This fourth round match will be their fourth time meeting on court, with Wawrinka leading 2-1. In all three meetings, the only completed match was won by Roddick back in 2009 during the first round of Davis Cup, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. The other two, Italy 2008 and Shanghai 2009, were the Swiss’s victories as a result of Roddick retiring due to injuries. The Chennai champ, however, was a Top Ten player back in 2008, reaching a career high of 8th, and holds wins over Andy Murray, Robin Soderling, and Roger Federer since then. Considering his back-hand his best shot, the 25-year-old will make his career high appearance in all five years playing in the AO when he steps on Rod Laver court tomorrow evening.

Here are more stats on Wawrinka:

Andy Fights for Fourth Round

Andy fought from a set down to defeat Robin Haase 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-2 in a little under two and a half hours Friday to clinch his spot in the fourth round. The boys battled in 90 degree heat, the hottest conditions of this year’s tournament to date.

Despite winning the opening set, Haase rolled his ankle early in the match and required medical treatment. Andy did not let the break disturb his concentration. The matched turned to Andy’s favor when he took advantage of some unforced errors in the second set tie-breaker.

“He gave me some help in the tiebreaker by serving two double-faults and I hit a good return on the line and then had two serves with the wind behind me,” Andy shared after the match. “I was given advice from my coach Larry Stefanki to play more aggressively and position myself better on court and it paid off.”

In the Sweet Sixteen, Andy will face either Stanislas Wawrinka or Gael Monfils Sunday.

Roddick Faces Haase For First Time

“I think when you’re confident, the court just makes sense; decisions come easier to you,” Roddick noted post-match on Day 3 about his strength and confidence on court so far in 2011. “A lot of it comes naturally… I feel comfortable out there right now.” Comfort and confidence are two great tools to have on court as Andy faces unseeded youngster Robin Haase of the Netherlands in Round 3, second on Hisense Arena court after an 11am start.

These two competitors have never played each other before, but Haase defeated Argentine Juan Monaco (28) in the last round, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, and is entering his first career Round 3 match in a Grand Slam. This lefty-who-plays-righty reached a career high ranking of 56th back in 2008, dropped below 600 in 2009, and made a resurgence last year, reaching 62nd coming into the AO. To his disadvantage, though, Roddick’s best and favorite surface is hard court, while the 23-year-old prefers to complete on clay. As the weather heats up in Melbourne, apparently so has Andy’s opponent, but hopefully our American can squelch Haase’s fire with his confidence and powerful tactics on Friday.

Andy Into Round Three

Andy defeated Igor Kunitsyn in straight sets 7-6 (7), 6-2, 6-3 Wednesday to book a spot in the third round of the Australian Open. Next Andy will take on either Robin Haase or Juan Monaco Friday.

“Well, I get to play again so that’s all you want,” Andy commented after his victory. “You know, it could have gotten uncomfortable today if that first set would have gotten away, but I feel like I’m hitting the ball fine,” Andy admitted.

“I’m serving very well. Kind of controlling the match with that right now. That’s always a good thing for me. For me that just comes with playing matches. I’ve certainly been out on the court enough the early part of the season in Brisbane and now here so I feel comfortable out there right now.” An impressive 17 aces, three breaks and a 67 percent first serve helped Andy reach his comfort zone.

Round 2 in Rod Laver: Kunitsyn

Second on after an 11am start in Rod Laver Arena, our No. 1 American will take on another unseeded player, Russia’s Igor Kunitsyn, on Day 3, Wednesday, January 19th, Down Under.

Roddick and the Russian have met twice before, first in Wimbledon, 2009 and then Queen’s Club, 2010, with our American claiming both wins. The 99th ranked player only took one set off our AO Semifinalist during their first meeting, which was the month that Kunitsyn reached a career high ranking of 35th in the world. Even though the Vladivostok resident’s ranking has since dropped, he’ll be playing on his favorite surface this time, hoping to utilize his ground-stroke/baseline game. In the four years the 29-year-old has played at the Australian Open, this is the farthest he’s succeeded in the draw, having defeated Poland’s Michael Przysiezny in a close four sets in Round 1. Kunitsyn will be fighting to reach his first Round 3 Slam appearance.

Here are more stats:
Age:29 (30.09.1981)
Birthplace:Vladivostok, Russia
Residence:Vladivostok, Russia
Height:5’11″ (180 cm)
Weight:165 lbs (75 kg)
Plays:Right-handed
Turned Pro:1999
Coach:Allen Fox

Andy Through In Melbourne

Andy had a comfortable win over Jan Hajek to progress to the second round of the Australian Open. Andy defeated the Czech 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Andy fired 18 aces against Hajek and won all 11 of his net approaches. Following the win, Andy said,

“I served well; I put a lot of returns in. So it was good.

“I feel good. I had a good off‑season. I feel healthy and strong for the first time in a while. You know, got five matches in in Brisbane, which is all you can pretty much ask for. I certainly feel like I’m prepared.”

Andy also shared his best memories at the Australian Open,

“The El Aynaoui was a good one. But I think also ’09 was when I made the semis; that was good. I lost to Roger. But I think it had been two years since I had been in a semifinal of a slam, so that was something good for me. I felt real good about that.”

In the second round, Andy will face Igor Kunitsyn of Russia.
