Memphis Draw Released

This week Andy returns to Memphis to defend his title at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships & Memphis International. Seeded second, Andy has been drawn to face Xavier Malisse in the first round. The match will be on Wednesday, at 7pm CST.

Andy has enjoyed much success in Memphis. The three-time Champion memorably won the tournament last year with a spectacular diving shot, against Milos Raonic.

Against Malisse, Andy faces an opponent who has been on the tour just two years longer than himself. The Belgian has never managed a win against Andy though, who has a 9-0 head to head over the 31-year-old. The top seed in Memphis is John Isner, and SAP Open Champion, Milos Raonic also joins the field.

SAP Quarterfinal Preview: Roddick vs. Istomin

Facing another first-time opponent who is also named Denis, American Andy Roddick is set to take on Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the quarterfinals of the SAP Open tonight at 7pm at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.

The 25-year-old Russian native is hoping to surpass last year’s quarterfinal appearance here where he lost to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in straight sets. Being noted for defeating Kohlschreiber in the first round of Wimbledon in 2011, Istomin’s ranking of 61st in the world is deceiving, which is evident as he has defeated American’s Sam Querrey and Michael Russell to reach Roddick in the quarters here. Even though Istomin’s ranking has recently dropped, having reached his career high of 39th back in 2010, he started 2012 off strong by reaching the Sydney semis (l. to Nieminen) and battling tooth and nail against Tsonga in the opening round of the Australian Open, losing in four close s ets. Needless to say, this match against the three-time SAP Open champ promises to display top-notch tennis.

Here are more stats on the recent university graduate (June, 2011):
Age: 25 (07.09.1986)
Birthplace: Orenburg, Russia
Residence: Moscow, Russia
Height: 6’2″ (188 cm)
Weight: 194 lbs (88 kg)
Plays: Right-handed
Graduated: University of Physical Culture & Sport in Uzbekistan

Andy Fights into SAP Quarterfinals

Andy clinched match point at 10:15pm Wednesday night to the cheers of fans in the HP Pavilion who had watched an all American battle. After nearly three hours of play and attention from a medical trainer, Andy defeated compatriot and Denis Kudla 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-4 to advance to the Quarterfinals of the SAP Open.

Both Andy and Denis had break point opportunities in the opening set but neither the 2nd seeded Roddick or Qualifier Kudla broke. The set marched on to a thrilling tie-break where the two battled evenly again to 5-5 until Kudla’s impressive forehand and skilful rallies claimed the first set 7-6(5).

The second set had fans on the edge of there seats with neither Andy nor Denis wavering. Again the pair held to a tie-break, where this time the 17th ranked Roddick was victorious 7-6 (5).

Andy’s experience on the tour played a big role in the third set as he clinched a break to take a 4-3 lead. Andy served out the set for the win and a place in the SAP Open Quarterfinals. Despite having only played eight matches on the ATP World Tour prior to the SAP Open, Denis Kudla proved that he has a future on Center court!

Andy Looking to Return in San Jose

Andy is planning to return to San Jose next week where he is a three time Champion at the SAP Open.

Speaking in a telephone conference last week, Andy gave an update on his hamstring injury, which forced him to retire at the Australian open:

“I haven’t hit a ball since Australia. We’ve just been working on different types of treatments trying to get it right. The MRI came back probably not as good as we were hoping. But I’m hoping to be hitting balls for the first time next Monday. If all goes well there, that should be plenty of time to be ready. Bill (Rapp, San Jose Tournament Director) was nice enough to confirm a Wednesday night start for me in San Jose, so that gives me a little extra time.

If all goes well on Monday, I should have a good seven, eight, nine days to hit balls beforehand and I think that should be enough.”

Talking about his return to San Jose, Andy reflected on his favorite moments from the event,

“It’s been a place that I’ve always certainly enjoyed playing. I think anyplace you go back to and you’ve won three times, there’s obviously plenty of great memories.
My favorite is probably when I got to play Mardy in the final. Everyone knows our story and our history. He had actually broken through. He wasn’t ranked super high going into that tournament, so it was fun for me to play him then.”

Following San Jose, Andy is entered into Memphis and then an exhibition at Madison Square Gardens.
