BNP Paribas Showdown Exho Excites Crowd & Players

Like a boxer making his way to the ring, American Andy Roddick high-fived fans as he jogged down to the court with his hood up and the spotlight on him, getting “ready to rumble.” Fireworks welcomed both he and his opponent, Roger Federer, to the most famous arena in the world – Madison Square Garden.

The fifth annual BNP Paribas Showdown proudly welcomed back Federer, who played Sampras in 2008, and was thrilled to have Roddick, Maria Sharapova, and Caroline Wozniacki making their debut appearances at this NYC event. However, the beauty of exhibitions is that you never know what you’re going to get!

Highlights of the match:

- Roddick defeated Federer 7-5, 7-6(7), and commented afterwards, ” “I’m obviously in Roger’s head,” he joked. “He had no idea how to play me and I capitalized on that… The whole night felt surreal. I could feel Jeremy Lin wanted me to win tonight. I felt his energy in the building.”

- Ben Stiller and wife Christine Taylor, the face of Ten and Under Tennis, signed Andy’s program mid-match.

- After a “Vamos, Rafa!” comment echoed down to Andy, he gave the crowd just what they wanted – Rafa, or a very good impersonation of his for a point, including the roaring, knee-up fist pump at the end.

- Fellow celeb friends cheered Roddick on, singer John Legend and fiancee Chrissy Teigen, wedding gown designer Vera Wang, and of course his wife, Brooklyn Decker.

- “I love you, Andy!” someone from the crowd shouting, and as quick and witty as ever, Andy hollered back, “Thanks, Mom!”
Great play, good fun, and a lot of laughs and fan interactions! Were you there? Send us your experience at iwasthere@andyroddick.com, and your adventure could be a feature article on AR.com.

“It was a great atmosphere,” Roddick said. “I really enjoyed myself and that led to me playing well. Hopefully I can use this a little bit,” and his next opportunity to do so will be this week at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. Stay tuned to AR.com for a preview.

Andy into Delray Quarterfinals

“I got it done in the end,” Andy said following his second round victory over Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-4. Next, Andy faces South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in Friday’s Quarterfinal.
Despite a lower first serve percentage than the American is used to, Andy was positive about Thursday’s battle at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.

“I’m feeling better than I did a couple of matches ago,” Andy shared, “I served horrendously and still won and was still able to break serve.” Andy faced five break points but only gave up one opportunity in the first set.

In the second set, Andy broke in the 11th game, fighting back from 15-40. It was the momentum the American needed, serving out the set for the win in the following game.
“You want to close. I thought the misses I had were positive misses because they were played on my terms. I think that was a big step.”

Roddick Moves On in Delray

In an hour and forty minutes, American Andy Roddick defeated Germany’s Philipp Petzschner in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the opening round of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.

Returning to his inaugural pro tour tournament, the South Florida native faced a fiery first round opponent and dropped the first set, 6-4, but Roddick wasn’t going down on his home turf. In the second set, he raised his first serve percentage (68%) and broke the German twice to even the score. The third held a lot of hard hitting and aggressive offense from the American, which resulted in a 6-1 final set score.

Stay tuned to AR.com for the next round preview as Andy will be facing recent opponent Denis Istomin (UZB) at this ATP World Tour 250 event.

Delray Beach Intl. Tennis Championships Preview

Andy returns to the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships Tuesday evening where he will face Germany’s Philipp Petzschner.

The first hard court tournament in North America this calendar year features a deep field with nine of the top 40 players competing. Delray will always be a sentimental event for Andy, as this was his first ATP World Tour tournament 12 years ago. Andy looks to stay healthy this week and has been very honest about his disappointment with recent injuries. “It would be abnormal if you weren’t frustrated,” Andy shared. “The question is, ‘How do you figure your way through it?’”

There is no doubt Delray fans will help Andy answer that question Tuesday Night as the fourth seed returns to his South Florida roots. This will be the first meeting between Andy and 61st ranked Philipp Petzschner

Check out some stats on Petzschner courtesy of the ATP World Tour:

“I hit the ball okay, I just didn’t hit it well when I had to,” Roddick commented after his match Wednesday Night in Memphis. “I had nine, ten years of a pretty clean bill of health overall. I think for me to feel too sorry for myself now, it probably wouldn’t be okay.”

Andy Roddick was upset in the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, in his first-round match to world No. 75 Xavier Malisse, 6-7 (8), 5-7. Despite having two set point opportunities in the first set, the defending Champion left with a tough loss.
